Dogs unlike humans are not responsible for their own weight but we are. If you feel that your dog is overweight then you will need to retrace all your steps on feeding him or her and then do something about it. Recent studies show that dogs that are lean tend to live longer than those that are overweight. In fact the life expectancy of overweight dogs is said to be 2.5 years less than that of an athletic well maintained dog.
There are some of the ways that you will be able to tell whether your dog is fit or not. If you want to know whether your dog is athletic and of the right weight check for the following: you should be able easily feel the ribs and also the waist of the dog should be visible i.e. pleat after the ribs. If not, then it means that a lot of fat has accumulated thus making it overweight. If your dog cannot enjoy its activities without straining then you will need to check its weight. You will notice that it pants a lot or in pain due to the joints and this is an alarm that something needs to be done.
The main cause of obesity in dogs is the type of foods that we give them. To help curb the weight menace, we have to adopt some changes in their meals. Food that is rich in carbohydrates and low in fat and protein are some of the best ways on how you can control its weight. They tend to thrive more in protein rich foods as it is used to build muscles. We also have to avoid carbs as they are stored in the body as fat and that is responsible for its overweight.
To solve that, we have to adopt a system whereby the dog is fed on high protein food and low in carbs. In addition, fat will come in handy but in low quantity. Fat is known to satisfy the dog’s appetite and therefore it will not need too much. As a dog owner it’s your responsibility to make sure that you look after your dog and that you give him the best possible nutrition and exercise for a healthy life.
There diseases or disorders that are associated with obesity in dogs. They are: pancreatitis, heart disease, disc disease, hip dysplasia, joint diseases among others. To avoid losing our best friend soon, then we have to adopt new practices towards a healthy life like: proper feeding programs and time, regular exercises, frequent checkups and supplements in the meals to maintain their energy levels throughout.
